They fall into the same category as so many media critics - they call truth and facts biased and "fake news" because the truth makes them uncomfortable. Perhaps the discomfort they feel is not from the left-wing media, but the conflict they have between their misinformed values and reality. It is so much easier to deny truth and distort truth than to embrace it. I thought, "F...I just had the same experience. I thought, "Fantastic!" I even shared the website with my colleagues as a possible resource. Then I started reading the examples of bias. They were current! Amazing! What could be better? I read the first one. Very interesting. Obvious bias. Then I read the second one. Hmm. Not so obvious bias and also biased in the same direction as the first. The third, same thing.

Student News Daily sounds like such an unbiased title and according to their about page they were not affiliated with any one group. Could it be coincidence that the first three sources were all showing bias in one direction? Not likely. Plus the descriptions of bias seem slanted. So I searched and found this.

To be honest, I lean right and I do believe the media is generally biased left. I believe it is more than perception. But it's my job to teach students to be able to recognize bias on their own, not to tell them what to believe. If I teach them well, if there is bias in one direction over another, they will recognize this regardless of which way they lean. But this source makes a mockery out of "unbiased" reporting.

Allsides.com is a much better source, but I liked the quiz-type aspect of Student News Daily. It's more inquiry-like but with explanations. If someone knows of another source that is set up like that but is not biased, I'd love to learn about it. Liberals expect the government to take care of them. Conservatives, on the other hand, are virtuous, hard working, pick-themselves-up-by-the-bootstraps types who take control of their own destiny, as long as the government stays out of their way.

The "Socialism vs Capitalism" page is even worse, if that's possible. Socialism (community control of the means of production) is redefined as "Government controls all means of production" In other words, a textbook definition of a totalitarian Communist state, not Socialism. Further down, Socialism's goal is "Redistribution of wealth". These lies have been repeated so often and so long in the conservative media that they are simply accepted as factual by the consumers of talk radio and Fox News. It's no wonder conservative voters hate liberals. If any of this were true, I'd hate liberals, too. mikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14431817585019447251noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6596959769037605078.post-47434841519016894742019-07-06T19:39:21.060-06:002019-07-06T19:39:21.060-06:00Thank you. Some students will jump those hoops like I did, and they'll do just fine, but I'm thinking the no-grades approach is more compassionate and respectful of my students' needs as learners. I'm going to be transparent about it so I can evoke conversation about it at my school to challenge the status quo, and then within my district, and then ultimately, in my state. That's my goal, anyway. Thanks so much for your comment! I was raised on this carrot-stick mentality - and I just don't think it's right.
